Is SEVEN a pop-up gallery or a mini satellite art fair? Don't be confused by this Art Basel Miami hybrid in the Wynwood Arts District. Its roots go back to Basel 2004 when New York's Pierogi Gallery and Ronald Feldman Fine Arts set up shop in the Design District after looking for a little more (and less expensive) space for an alternative platform to show contemporary art, large installations and collabs. In 2006 they were joined by London's Hales Gallery and this year, the original group was increased to seven -- hence the name -- with the addition of BravinLee programs, Postmasters Gallery, PPOW and Winkleman Gallery. Why not go with one of the dozens of existing fairs? PPOW's Wendy Olsoff explains: "The chance to have our artists' work in a dialogue with the other artists exhibited without the constraints of a three-sided booth is an interesting experiment, as well as a truly exciting concept." Or, as Paul Hedge, owner of Hales, told the Financial Times, "The art world is very conservative. The private views, the cards, the catalogues. I'm sure they all had a role once, but now surely it's time to move on." SEVEN is in a 24,000-square-foot space on two floors at 2214 North Miami Avenue, Miami, and it's free and open to the public from November 30th to December 5th.
